Micro Freebies – The New Way to Grow Your Email List

Hey everyone!

Today, I’m sharing something a little different, and I’m really excited about it. Last month inside Email Insiders, I taught a class on how to grow your email list using micro freebies. In that class, I shared the best ways I have found to grow my email list quickly.

If you are looking for long-term, strategic, organic growth that is also FAST, this micro freebie strategy may be for you! This is a really fun strategy I have been testing this in my business and I absolutely LOVE it! This is a fresh way to invite people to your email list that doesn’t rely on the same old “post your freebie in your link in bio” strategy.

If you’ve ever felt like you don’t want to keep talking about the same lead magnet all the time, or if you’re looking for a fun new way to make email list growth feel easy, this blog is for you!

What is the best way to grow my email list fast?

Before we dive into micro freebies, I want to talk about a question I get all the time in email marketing and business groups: What is the best way to grow my email list fast?

What I have noticed in my business and what I’ve seen working for my colleagues and clients, these have been the best way to grow your email list fast:

  1. Hosting your own events. Last fall, I hosted my own micro audio summit and added about 400 new subscribers to my email list from that one event. Host an event, bundle, summit, or collab – whatever that looks like for you – can grow your list 10x faster than other methods.
  2. Joining strategic collaborations. Lead magnet swaps, bundles, and summits can be great ways to get in front of a new audience. The key is joining ones that get you in front of an audience that is super aligned with what you do. I used to say yes to every opportunity, but now I’m more intentional. The right collaborations bring in subscribers who are genuinely interested in what you offer.
  3. Running Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads. I personally turn on Meta ads for my freebie when I want to focus on list growth. I usually spend $5-$10 per day for two weeks, and it’s been a great way to bring in consistent subscribers.

These are the three methods I have really leaned on and have seen others lean on the most to grow an email list quickly.

But today, I want to introduce you to micro freebies—a way to consistently invite people to your email list without creating massive new funnels or running ads.

You could choose one or two of these fast ways to grow your list, and you can combine it with this micro freebies method. I have tested this out of my business in the month of January and I have been able to grow my list by 62 subscribers – which is really cool for a month and a small audience. I was really happy with that and I know you will be too.

So, let’s dive into micro freebies!

What Is a Micro Freebie?

A micro freebie is something you’ve already created—whether it’s already part of your content, paid program, or something you were going to create anyway. You can use it as an invitation to join your list.

Instead of always promoting the same lead magnet, micro freebies allow you to make different invitations to your list in a way that feels natural and exciting.

The goal of these micro freebies is to make little invitations for people to join your world constantly and in various different ways instead of always promoting the same lead magnet.

Examples of Micro Freebies

If you’re wondering what a micro freebie could look like, here are a few ideas:

  • Classes from your paid program. You could easily pull a class and say  “Hey, I have a free class on this that is normally for my paid members, but it’s yours today for free!”
  • Templates, PDFs, or resources that already exist in your paid offers. You can pull that out and share for free if they sign up for your list.
  • Exclusive email content. I do this with my If I Was Your Copywriter newsletter. Every Wednesday, I send exclusive content to my email list—things I don’t share anywhere else. If someone wants access, they have to subscribe to my list.
  • Repurposed content from past blog posts, podcast episodes, or trainings. Maybe you wrote an amazing blog post a year ago that’s buried under new content. Bring it forward, spruce it up and turn it into a freebie!

The key is to use what you already have instead of feeling like you need to constantly create new lead magnets.

How to Use Micro Freebies in Your Business

Here’s how I’ve been using this strategy:

  1. Pick one day per week to share a micro freebie. I choose one piece of content—something I’ve already created—and use it as an invitation to join my list.
  2. Make multiple invitations. Instead of always promoting the same lead magnet, I switch it up. One week, I might share an exclusive email. Another week, I might offer a template.
  3. Encourage social sharing. I’ve been asking my email subscribers to screenshot my newsletter and share it on Instagram. When they tag me, I offer a free copy audit in return. This has helped me grow my list in a really organic way.

One of my goals with this strategy is to eventually create a free resources page on my website. That way, instead of my micro freebies disappearing in Instagram posts, they’ll live in one place where new visitors can always find them.

Worried About Setting Up a Welcome Funnel?

If you’re thinking, This sounds great, but I don’t want to create a new funnel every time I offer a micro freebie, don’t worry!

I created A simple welcome sequence you can use for any freebie or offer. It’s a three-email sequence that welcomes new subscribers, introduces you, and guides them to your best content. The only thing you need to change is the name of the freebie in the first email. Everything else stays the same. This way, you can make multiple invitations to your list without feeling overwhelmed.

You can find out more about this welcome sequence on the blog or by listening to this podcast episode

Why I Love This Strategy

This method works because it allows you to:

  • Content repurposing. You are taking what you are already doing and making it go further for you.
  • Test different offers. You’ll see what resonates most with your audience.
  • Keep list growth fun and fresh. You won’t feel stuck talking about the same freebie every day.
  • Have more options for collaborations. When applying for bundles or summits, you’ll have multiple freebies to offer.

I hope this micro freebie strategy helps you with growing your email list! Let me know how you use them in your business! Send an email to hello@jennyrothcopywriting.com or tag me in IG @jennyrothcopywriting with your insights or questions!
