Dear Female Founder,
Before I was a copywriter or mother or wife or college graduate or barely even an adult, I was a teacher and family service worker for Migrant Head Start.
Every summer, families would (and still do) migrate to North Dakota to work the fields for sugar beet harvest.
Some beautiful soul somewhere had the idea to set up a summer school for these families. So the parents had somewhere safe for their little ones to be during the day – not in the fields.
I wish I had photos of this time in my life, but it was 2006, and flip phones.
I could speak Spanish, so I went on home visits and asked questions like How can we help? and What do you need? and How can we make the school better for your kids?
Our director was one of those incredible types of teachers you pray your kids have. She told us every morning, “Remember, these families are trusting us with their most precious gift – their children. Let’s not let them down. It’s the least we can do.”
I watched people working so hard to give their kids everything.
I watched people welcome me into their homes, put up with my white girl nonsense and beginner Spanish, feed me everything, tell me their stories, and treat me so kindly for no reason at all except I was there and they could.
I watched people fill out mountains of paperwork and show up and do everything so their kids could go to this school and not be out in the hot sun in a field for the entire day.
I watched people help people without giving – to be frank – two shits about their immigration status or whether they paid taxes or blah blah fucking blah.
Because of this life experience and job that, honestly, I don’t even know what I did to deserve, you will never in a million years convince me that I should be afraid of immigrants.
You will never convince me that because someone is born on one side of an imaginary line, they don’t deserve the same respect and chances as someone born on the other side.
Warsan Shire said, “No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of the shark,” and I know this is true to my bones. Because mothers have told me straight up: they didn’t want to leave their entire world behind to go to the U.S. to work ~ they HAD to to survive.
I’m not afraid of migrants or people who want to come to the U.S. because I know them, and to know people is to love them – with the exception of sociopaths, of course – but mostly…
To know people is to love them.
If you are afraid of something – get to know it.
Immigrants are not random faces on the news to me. They are Rosie, Raquel, Monica, and so many other REAL women and families and people that I know.
If you are afraid of something, run to it.
Get uncomfortable putting yourself in places where you don’t know everything. Get to know what you don’t know. Know the people behind the stories.
Then, decide what you really think.
I don’t have answers to anything that matters right now. I am praying for the courage and opportunity to acknowledge what breaks my heart and what I’m afraid of and go toward it, not turn away.
This is normally a blog for business owners, and when I think about what’s happening in the world, I always think about business too, because that’s what I do.
What are you afraid of right now in your life and in your WORK?
Run there. Get to know it. See it for yourself. Get uncomfortable with it.
You might realize there is nothing to be afraid of after all.
You might find you actually do have the talent, power, strength, time, and ability to accomplish that thing you’re telling yourself you’re too afraid of.
I hope this post was helpful!
